Industry: Non Profit

Founded: 1925

Established in 1925 as the Upstate Baptist Home for Children [UBHC] by Harriet Parish Smith, Springbrook is an organization founded on the ability to turn challenge into opportunity. Parish Smith turned personal tragedy—the death of her only child—into triumph. Her vision, love, and ability, led to years of successfully finding caring homes for children in need.

In the 1960s, when faced with a new federal system, our organization could have faltered. But instead, UBHC embraced the change and recognized that after more than 30 years serving children in need of homes, the new foster care system was a better choice for orphaned children. So our board chose to change our mission in order to support children who were not receiving the best care possible at the time. UBHC was certified as a school for children with special needs in 1967. Very quickly UBHC grew, expanding to support not only children but also adults with developmental disabilities.

For 90 years, Springbrook's growth has continued (sometimes at a staggering rate). Yet our commitment remains firm. The ever-changing needs of the individuals we support have dictated the strategic expansion and addition of programs and services. Today, Springbrook offers a host of supports in the home, at school, and in the community to families and individuals of all ages. We offer these supports not just for a day, a week, or even a year. At Springbrook, compassion is a lifetime commitment.
