Springbrook invites community members to attend the 4th Annual Springbrook Invitational Special Olympics Basketball Tournament, happening on Saturday, March 12, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

This year’s tournament features 8 teams: the Springbrook Scorpions JV and Varsity, the Saratoga Wildcats JV and Varsity, the Broome Royals, Pathfinder Village, and Schenectady Fastbreak. The event will also feature an Individual Skills Competition, where 22 competitors will perform a series of basketball maneuvers within a given set of parameters.

Following opening ceremonies at 9 a.m., participating teams will break into pairing games and skills matches. Springbrook is hosting the games in its two state-of-the-art, regulation-size gymnasiums located at The School at Springbrook, 105 Campus Drive, Oneonta (just off Hwy. 28), and Springbrook’s Community Campus, located at 5588 State Hwy. 7, Oneonta (next to Brooks’ BBQ).

The Scorpions basketball team has been highly successful in Special Olympics tournaments, regularly taking home Silver and Gold medals. At the 2015 New York State Games, the Varsity team brought home the Bronze medal, and the JV team earned the Silver medal during their 2015 tournament in Buffalo. Last year, during the Springbrook Invitational Tournament, the Springbrook Scorpions Varsity team placed third in Division 2 and JV placed second. The Springbrook Invitational will kick off the Springbrook Scorpions basketball season.

Springbrook’s Special Olympics Program is host to a basketball, soccer, and track & field team and is 100% donor funded. The organization would like to thank the following for making this year’s Special Olympics Program possible: Maines Paper & Food Service, Oneonta Elks Club No. 1312, American Portfolios/APFS Rochester, Brewery Ommegang, and the Mirabito Family.
